Are you talking about Dashboard? That was removed in Catalina. Some of them have moved to Notification Center and others can be replicated with Notification Center Widgets available in the App Store.

I see no reason as to why any of those things would stop working. The apps still have support much later than that, and Catalina still supports the CD drive.

Is the HDD partitioned? If the Linux install is taking up all of the hard drive and is formatted for that, that's possibly why. You would need to get the HDD or at least a portion of it back to Mac OS Extended format (HFS+).
