Step 1: Know your limitations: HD video content can only be played on an iPhone 4, 5, or 6, or on your iPod Touch, iPad or iPad 2, Apple TV, or Mac. Other devices, like a non-Touch iPod, will not be able to play back HD video content.

Step 2: To prepare your computer to play 720p HD video, you’ll need to make sure your OS is version 10.5 or later. You’ll need iTunes 10 or a later edition, and either an Intel Core 2 Duo or a faster processor than that. You’ll also need a full gigabyte of RAM and a display that can support HDCP. Your screen resolution should be set to 1024 by 768 or higher.

Step 3: If you plan to download 1080p HD video, you’ll need iTunes 10.6 or later, and at least 2 gigabytes of RAM. Set your resolution to 1280 by 800 or higher.

Step 4: Go to iTunes, and then select Preferences and Store. You’ll see a tag that says ‘When downloading HD videos, prefer,’ and that’s where you can change your preference from 720p to 1080p as necessary. Your computer will start automatically downloading video in 1080p whenever it’s available.

Step 5: Simply synch your content to a compatible, authorized device, and you’re ready to take your HD videos on the go.

Recap: It’s easy to download HD video to your Mac, or even upgrade your video quality to 1080p whenever it’s available. Follow the steps above and you’ll be on your way to an HD content experience.
