Dragon NaturallySpeaking 12.0 No Longer Checks for Automatic Updates during Start-Up

For a sensitive application like Dragon NaturallySpeaking 12.0, it is really a bad thing if it is not configured to check for updates automatically during the start-up. When the program is installed on a computer, it has the default configuration of checking the updates. If you are facing an issue as mentioned in the title of this tutorial, it is quite possible that someone with elevated privileges as modified the settings either accidentally or deliberately.

Since modifying the automatic update checking settings is an administrative task, you must provide the administrator’s credentials to change the configuration. If you are logged on to the computer using the administrator account itself, the User Account Control would display a ‘prompt for consent’ box in which you are required to click the ‘Yes’ button to allow the modifications to take place. On the other hand, if you are logged on using any standard (non-administrator) user account, the User Account Control would display a ‘prompt for credentials’ box where you are
required to provide the administrator’s username and password to continue with the configuration.

Also, since this modification is a global configuration and requires elevated privileges, it is mandatory that all the opened user profiles must be closed before proceeding. If a user profile is loaded into the program and is active, Dragon NaturallySpeaking 12.0 automatically prompts to close the profile before it goes any further.

By following the instructions given in this tutorial, you will be able to re-enable the settings in Dragon NaturallySpeaking 12.0 which would configure the application to check for the updates automatically every time a user profile is loaded.

Here’s what you need to do:

■Log on to the computer using administrator account.

■Initialize Dragon NaturallySpeaking 12.0 by double-clicking its icon.

■Once initialized, close the automatically loaded user profile by going to Profile > Close User Profile.

■Once the profile is closed, go to the Tools menu from the menu bar.

■From the displayed list, go to Administrative Settings.

■On the displayed User Account Control confirmation box, click Yes to continue. (You might be required to provide administrator’s credentials if the User Account Control prompts for them.).

■On the opened Administrative Settings box, make share that the Miscellaneous tab is selected.

■From the displayed interface, check the Check for product updates at startup checkbox.

    ■Click OK when done.

■Restart Dragon NaturallySpeaking 12.0 to allow the changes to take effect.

■If the issue persists, restart the computer and then try again.
