It may come as a surprise to some people that when you visit some websites, your browsing activity is tracked by that website. The claim is that this is only done for advertising purposes, but people really don’t know for sure.

You can ask sites not to track your browsing. The problem is that this is only a request, and sites and services can choose how to respond to it. Still, many people would like to enable this feature, and if you follow these instructions, you will be able to do so on your browser of choice.

1. Chrome - Just to the right of the address bar, there are three horizontal lines stacked on one another. Click this button and click on Settings, scroll down and click on Advanced Settings, look under Privacy, and check the box that says Send a “Do Not Track” request with your browsing traffic.

2. Mozilla Firefox - In Firefox, go to Tools, then select Options, then select Privacy. There is a check box beside the phrase “Tell websites I do not want to be tracked”. Click to place a check in the box.

3. Internet Explorer - With Internet Explorer, click Tools, then click Internet Options, then click Settings, then click Advanced. There is a check box next to the phrase “Always send Do Not Track header”. Click to place a check in the box.

4. Safari - In the Safari menu, open Preferences, then click Privacy. Under the Privacy tab, there is a section called Website Tracking and a check box next to the phrase “Ask websites not to track me”. Click to place a check in the box.
