Google Play Games lets you find nearby players playing the same multiplayer games that you are. The downside is that it's limited to a few multiplayer games at the moment, so it won't be competing with Xbox Live.
Here's how to do it:
Steps:
1. Open ‘Google Play Games’ on your device.
2. Open a multiplayer game in Google Play Games.
3. Sign in to ‘Google Play Games’ from the running game by tapping on the ‘Google Play Games’ icon.
4. Then tap on the ‘Multi-play’ button on your game which will take you to the player searching menu.
5. A warning message will pop up the first time you do this. Tap on ‘OK’
6. On the next page you will find a player searching option. Tap on ‘Nearby players: off’ button to turn it on and search for nearby players.
