Every time you update your Apple TV operating system, new features are being introduced. That is exactly why you should always update your OS whenever updates are available. Apple TV usually reminds you do to so, however, here are some steps you need to follow in order to update your Apple TV OS manually. There are two different explanations depending on the Apple TV generation.
4th Generation of Apple TV
This Apple TV generation runs a special operating system – tvOS. It is simply an iOS version, specialized for television and remote uses. These are the steps for updating a 4th Generation Apple TV:
1. Go to Settings and choose Systems. Once you've done that, go to Software Updates and choose the Update Software option.
2. Once you are there, check for available updates. If an update is available, select Download and Install. Your Apple TV will then download the update. Do not unplug or turn off the TV until the update is complete.
3. After the download, your Apple TV is going to restart as the upgrade will be prepared for installation. Again, make sure you do not unplug or turn off anything.
4. The final step, after downloading and preparing the update, is the installation. After Apple TV installs and completes the upgrade, it will automatically restart once more.
However, it is recommended that you set your Apple TV to download and install new updates automatically. To do so, go to Settings, then choose System. Once you've done that, choose Software Update, and simply turn on the Automatically Update option.
3rd Generation Or Older
Software updates are a little bit different with the older versions of OS. However, they are still quite simple, so all you have to do is to follow these steps:
1. At the far right, go to Settings and choose General.
2. If you scroll down for a bit, you will see an option named Software Updates. You will be offered two options: Update Automatically or Update Software. Choose Update Automatically if you do not want to do the process manually. Then, Your Apple TV will install new updates automatically, as they become available.
3. Once you have selected Update Software, your Apple TV will search for available updates. When an update is found, you will be able to choose Download and Install. Simply wait until a progress bar appears and your update is installed.
4. Once installed, the Apple TV will restart, and you will be able to enjoy all the new features.
