How to Use App-Specific Passwords with iCloud 2-Step Verification

If you are using a Mac, then you can use iCloud with third-party apps like Microsoft Word to store your work in the cloud. To use iCloud with non-Apple applications, though, you will have to use app-specific passwords to ensure the most secure login possible.

As Apple notes, this type of two-step verification keeps third-party apps from getting a hold of your iCloud login information, which in turn cuts back on the chances of your iCloud information falling into the wrong hands. Use the steps below to set up app-specific passwords for third-party apps you wish to use with iCloud.

Step 1
Don’t try to log in to iCloud using a third-party app, at least not yet. Instead, start by directing your web browser to Apple’s “My Apple ID” page. This page is located at appleid.apple.com.

Step 2
Once you are on the Apple ID page, click the “Manage your Apple ID” button. You will be prompted to sign into your Apple account.

Step 3
After signing in, click on “Password and Security.”

Step 4
Finally, click on “Generate App-Specific Password.” You will be taken through multiple steps to set up a new password for the third-party app that you wish to use with iCloud. Once the password is set up, exit your browser and use the password to log in to iCloud with your third party app.

Recap
When you use two-step verification and app-specific passwords with iCloud, you are able to keep your iCloud password safe while also integrating the cloud service with third-party apps. You can store up to 25 app-specific passwords in your account.
