Monster Hunter World: Combat Overview and Guide

Combat and fights with monsters make MHW a game what its name suggests. Players are supposed to be fighting giant, gigantic beasts and earning rewards thereon. But fighting monsters is a high-risk challenge requiring maximum caution on part of the player.
This is a MHW guideline that will help you manage your stamina while you fight beasts ensuring that you’re not left puffing for breath and are still able to circumvent monster attacks. Here you will find everything important that you need to know in order to combat monsters including some of the most important controls of the MHW.
Combat Overview
Shoot-out with monsters is what you will be spending most part of your time on in the monster hunter world. And before you jump into that, it is vitally important that you understand a few relevant elements.
- First of all, have a look at those green and yellow bars shown on the upper left area of your HUD. These bars represent your health and stamina respectively. Running out of health and stamina during a conflict with a monster could obviously be devastating.

- As soon as your health depletes, you’ll fall and be automatically transported to the nearest campsite where, when you reawaken, you’ll find all your items secure and intact.

- When you run out of stamina, your character stops, sprints, and gasps for inhaling breath. During this gasping movement, the character does not move and is therefore highly exposed to an attack by the monster. Never letting your stamina finish off completely is central to squaring off with a beast.
- Combating in the MHW is a game that requires strategy and an ability to avoid your opponent’s attacks. You can learn important tips from the starting ancient forest area as well as practice avoiding attacks from Jagras, the weakest of all the monsters you’ll face in the MHW.

- One of the most important lessons about combat in MHW is learning the attack patterns and warnings from the monsters that you encounter. Monsters usually make two kinds of attacked called standard attacks and area attacks.

- You need to save enough stamina to be able to dodge the attacks and as the attack ends, you need to press advantage using the evade mechanic in order to close the gap and then back off to safe space.

Okay so these were some key points to keep in mind when you are going for a combat. Now let’s move towards the combat controls guide:
MHW Combat Controls Guide
Regarding the attack on the monster, the controller button combinations are enlisted as follows
- Right Trigger: Weapon-transform/charge the attack
- Left trigger: Aims with ranged weapon and/or uses shield
- Circle/B: Makes a quick attack
- Triangle/Y: Mediocre/medium attack
- Circle/B+: Triangle/Y-massive charged attack
- Cross/A: Evade
Remember that all controls do not apply for every weapon. Exceptions do exist. Left trigger, for example, is entirely useless for weapons that don’t have a range or those without a shield such as dual blades.
