An SSD will help. Also, how much RAM do you have? If you only have 4GB going up to 8 would also do you some good. Going from 8 to 16 won't make much of a difference for you, though.

Just go to file explorer and see the total amount of storage you have on it. It'll probably be some weird number that's close to something more normal. For example, it might say something like "996.3GB" instead of "1TB". That's just because of the way the drive is partitioned, don't worry...

Both of those are pretty bad options. That gaming laptop is going to be big, loud, bulky, and overkill, and Macs are abysmal in terms of value. Depending on your budget, I'd take a look at the Huawei Matebook X Pro. It's fast, has a long battery life, and has a stellar quality of build and screen.

Second gen i5? Yeah, probably best that you just get a new machine.
