Actually it turns out one can use an At&t iPhone on ST but not the other way around (source). So yeah you would need it unlocked to be used on At&t. Sorry.

so many people buying these prepaid phones thinking they can unlock them but it is not true, these phones must be used on the prepaid network for at least 6 months before it can be unlocked.

it will work if it is unlocked by At&t. I know iPhone X sold by At&t isn't going to work on CDMA Verizon or Sprint but it should work fine on any international GSM network if it is unlocked. Apple sells SIM free unlocked versions which support any network worldwide.

Wow the pain people have to go through just to get their phone unlocked. That time could be used more productively like on drinking beer or watching the game or playing the game or you name it other productive ways of wasting time. No joke though, it is frustrating. Why not use one of those...
