I think the problem is solved. Today I bought a nice laptop cooler for it, and I've been playing the game now for two hours with no problem. Thanks for your answers :)

This is indeed a low priced notebook ($300), so is that what's happening? Is the processor simply not up to the task? I do know that the gpu is part of the processor on both of the ones I had (have). I will get a cooling pad tomorrow and post the results...I'm really hoping that does the trick...

In my original post, I stated that I have Clamwin, but I'm not satisfied with it (no real-time protection, quarantined items folder too hard to find, etc). But it looks like I might be stuck with it, unless someone knows of another kind? Thanks for the answers everyone.

Well, I did a complete reformat and reinstall, this time using the fdisk/mbr command to clear the master boot record; the trojan is still there. How is that possible?

Ken, I think you are onto something! When I reinstalled 98, I did NOT use the mbr command (didn't even know it existed). I've been reading up on that, and it looks like this trojan affects the master boot record, which would explain why it keeps coming back. I'm going to do another...
