I believe a big reason for "locked SSDs" is basically data corruption due to an unexpected power loss for the SSD. All consumer-grade SSDs are subject to the risk of data loss when they suddenly lose power. The computer is supposed to send the SSD a signal "standby_immediate" to prevent that...
