is this going to be the sort of thing I can replace myself (bear in mind I am not an expert by any means) or do I need to get someone to do it for me? Am I best off contacting Dell and seeing if they can fix it rather than messing about myself?

I've now got a new adapter and that hasn't solved the problem - the adapter light turns on when I plug it into the mains, turns off as soon as I plug it into my laptop, and turns back on as soon as I unplug it from my laptop. Guess that means it's the laptop that's at fault here! Any idea what...

no I don't - in theory I could get one but if I'm going to buy one I'd probably be better off getting a new adapter, like you suggest!
