You could also try the power settings in Windows and reset them to be maximum performance while on battery. I am not totally sure on that laptop but it could also switch to the integrated GPU from the processor when on battery and that could be the cause.

I would say go with the rift if you have a smaller amount of space. If you have room for the 15x15 play area then I would go with the Vive. I personally have the Vive and enjoy the games/content that allow you to walk around much more than the seated content. Then again the Vive is $200 dollars...
