    Connecting monitors to laptops

    my asus laptop has black dots and lines growing on the screen. I'm told this is a pixel problem. But I would like to know if I can connect a monitor to it and use it that way? If so, can I use any monitor or does it have to be brand specific/compatible? Thank you.
