Solid state or platter drive on the laptop? I know with laptops they have a tendency to throw slow 5400rpm drives inside them. My Dell had a 5400rpm; which made it dog slow. When I switched to a SSD, the performance improvement was quite dramatic.

Also, make sure your impedance (Ohms) going into the system matches closely to what it needs; not over or under by a lot. Mismatched impedance can play an enormous factor in sound quality.

As boosted1g said, try unplugging/plugging back in the router (power cycling). I've used many routers that exhibit the same strange behavior on occasion. As I say it, they get 'dumb' for a bit and need a kick. :)
