I tend to use Microsoft Security Essentials. It does the job and the updates come through windows update, so it's pretty idiot proof. It's also fairly resource light and can actually be uninstalled when you want it to be (unlike Norton).

If it can't see a bootable device then the boot device priority has somehow been changed or your hard drive has failed. If this is the case, then you need a new hard drive and reinstalling windows won't fix this.
