I own the headset myself, and I can't say there is much loss at all. Wireless is actually better as it supports Dolby 7.1 and DTS Headphone X instead of stereo over wired/wireless.

Any cable will do. All USB cables use the same 4 lane design, two data lanes, and two power lanes.

If you have a modem/router combo, then yes, you can get rid of your router. If you are using Ethernet, your modem will have to have enough ports for the laptops. If it doesn't, you can use an Ethernet switch.
