Back up your files now. I'm not going to click that link but I'll tell you that if you want to be safe then back your stuff up and reformat/reinstall windows.
Besides, 2.5 years is long overdue for windows reinstall.
I have a gaming PC that has an EVGA P2 750 watt powersupply and recently my surge protector has gone bad. I want to order one online and want to know what to buy.
I've seen a few nicely reviewed 30 dollar tripp-lite surge protectors... will that be good for a gaming PC?
Honestly you might be well off just having a Gaming/Home Desktop to keep wherever you live (dorm, apt, other) and a inexpensive laptop to use for classwork. (unless your studies need good specs)

Use headphones, if your card ever whines or something it will be annoying to have speakers. Headphones use surround sound which helps detect where noises are from in game. Also, they make great voice chat devices.
