Update: I put my computer to sleep last night. I installed the Intel display driver (from Acer) and checked device manager. No issues. Now, my computer did the same thing. Display off, unresponsive, power and battery lights both solid blue (normal behavior for it being on).

The problem is that you can't plug a headset like that into just the headphone jack in order to use the mic. You need a splitter to plug into the mic and headphone jacks. That isn't a Headset jack, it's a Headphone jack.

Did you test it on a site like this: onlinemictest.com ? I would assume your computer has separate mic and headphone jacks, correct?
