Thanks for reply. I found enough encouraging evidence to say yes-ok so I proceeded and the plot thickened... Put in new battery and turned on laptop. Booted up and displayed “plugged in, no battery detected”. I left it like that for an hour to see if as the battery perhaps still took a charge...
