I have tried with just the motherboard, removing the CPU and it does power up but the fan doesn't spin

I have acquired an Acer Aspire 5335 Laptop which will power up but the screen is completely black, no activity at all. I have tried differnet memory and a different hard drive but still a black screen. The fan is working so I am not sure whether this a motherboard. I don't know whether to buy...
