Excellent. Reseating the CPU has worked for me in the past as well. Some model Compaq notebooks were bad for thermal cycling, causing the CPU to lose good contact. Feels good to pull something back from almost going to the junk heap doesn't it! Cheers.

I've never tried it, but I can't see why it wouldn't work. What I would recommend that you do is backup your mail folders on XP and try it out. If things go wonky, you can copy your backup back to the original folder. No harm no foul. Cheers!

It could. Sounds like a burnt spot from your description. I think you now need to source replacement parts.

The Inspiron 1440 (pp42l) is a newer budget line Dell that hasn't been out long enough to really know its reliability. Dell in general is a good notebook for the money, but this being a budget laptop it will not be as rugged as some. Treat it right and you should be ok.
