Ccleaner is quite good for freeing up space.

I had the same problem when I was recording. If you go to the bottom right hand corner of your desktop and right click the sound button, if I remember correctly it's playback devices and there's an option somewhere there where you can turn down the D.b of your mic, this should solve the problem...
