Energy saving gets better with each generation, so the wait at least will mean you will have similar/better performance that uses less power so you have a longer battery time. Onboard graphics and mobile graphics cards get better each generation, so that is also a thing worth thinking about.

Yes you can run it safely, it may not run perfectly but it won't harm your computer. (Unless it's illegal software, that may give problems).

It looks like the laptop has a M.2 slot. (And I'm expecting it to currently have a normal 2.5" harddisk inside.) You can keep the 2.5" harddisk in there, and instead of a normal 2.5" sata SSD they could place a M.2 SSD card in there and have the current harddisk as a second normal data disk.

Damn this is a very hard choice, but in the end if you have a bit more patience during your graphical design and video productions I'd go for the GTX980 since that laptop will perform better in gaming but a little bit slower during your graphical work (based on cpu and gpu specs)

Looks like a fine deal to me. Don't expect to play the newest games on high settings with high framerates though if you were planning to buy it for gaming.
