Thanks nach, I looked that up and unfortunately it's priced at $1600 over here. Looks like we will have to be patient and keep an eye out for thunderbolt implementation in the sub$1000 notebook offering

Rico, that was what I had looked into and discovered there are fewer and fewer laptops available with ExpressCard slots and those that are available are well out of our budget

Looks like Thunderbolt might be the option. Unfortunately it is in its infancy with regards to Windows Notebooks, there are a few available but once again it appears that those models start at around $1600

I am having trouble finding any in their budget that has firewire (any at all actually) the other option was to find one with an Express slot and use a firewire adapter but alas, that technology seems to be on the way out as well and I have only found those slots in higher end business type...

Ok, so reading between the lines, the CPU, hdd, battery etc etc are all completely incidental and so long as the FireWire port and the bluray burning drive is present we can be confident in getting good value?

My parents quizzed me today on what laptop they should buy to replace their current one (screen crapped out on them). I have zero idea about laptops and after a quick look online I found it rather testing trying to look for specific features, so I thought I'd drop a request here for your help...
