It was just a loose cable, just under the keyboard. I took the laptop apart a few days ago to clean out the significant amount of dust build-up that had accumulated over the last ~10 years. That is probably when the cable came loose as a result of it not being seated right/completedly plugged...

...It works when I connect external speakers via a USB port. Could an internal ribbon cable be loose? Incidentally, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the audio drivers, and have the lastest version. Thanks.
