    I will say that Macbook Air isn't even 15.6" so if she is used to its weight an all that, I would go with 13.3" or 14" laptop and not 15.6", the minimum weight for 15.6" is around 4 lbs. 13 and 14 can go a lot lower.

    If you want to do a Velcro, go for it. It is pretty much an external HDD just like any other ones out on the market. You can carry in your bag and use it as a flash drive.

    The enclosure is pretty much a box with SATA to USB built-in, you open the enclosure, connect the SATA to USB to the HDD, put the HDD into the enclosure, close it, connect to the laptop via USB.
