You won't need to buy an anti-virus but do as the above article says and boot into safe mode with command prompt and restore your system, then download malwarebytes anti malware, and maybe give avast a quick download and use the boot scanner. Both are free

You don't have to use real time protection, so no. Only open it when you want to scan and it won't interfere with anything else

Try lavasoft ad-aware or malwarebytes anti-malware. Both have free versions that you can use just as an additional scanner, both better that MSE with 1% of the system footprint
