So you haven't tried to run it yet? you may have ruined the LCD if i'm picturing it correctly in my mind, but boot it up and see. That's the only thing that i would think may be messed up...and you may be able to find a replacement panel and top for it...

Get a Raspberry Pi and camera module, You can get all set up for way under $100 US and definitely record as long as you want. You might learn some stuff in the process too :)

Yes, a ssd will fit perfectly, the mSATA slot is separate from the HDD slot, it looks like a mpcie slot, but is for things like mSATA ssd's. My laptop has one of these as well, and i actually replaced the main drive with a 120 GB Samsung 840, then put a 32 GB cheapie mSATA SSD in the mSATA slot...

It's not usually a relevant spec for a laptop which is why it's hard to find, but i'd confidently say you have at least Sata II, probably Sata III. I couldn't find the specific info either though.

Be careful in your looking for it (there's a very similarly named piece of malware), but HDD Scan is a good utility that lets you can a drive sector by sector and get access times for each sector, which is very helpful in diagnosing the remaining life/current health of a drive. EDIT: I don't...

I would probably go with the Acer to keep the machine more rounded, it has a much better GPU, while the CPU is still good. That being said, i'd probably also add another 4GB of ram to it after i bought it because 4GB is a bit low (many people can get by with 4 though). I like Asus build quality...

TIM is Thermal Interface Material, just shorthand for thermal pad or grease. As long as you go slowly, opening a laptop isn't too bad (though it varies a bit by brand...the one dell i took apart wasn't too fun). You shouldn't have to take it very far apart to check this, just the bottom shell...
