Try deadpixelbuddy first of all. If that doesn't work And you want to make sure it isn't software side, then reinstall the graphics driver(s) and maybe monitor drivers.

How old is the laptop? It could have been really bad timing, but I would be surprised if that was related to the software for a line. Does the rest of the screen work? The thing I due for dead pixels and lines is push on the screen near the area, but not to hard, wiggle my fingers around, and...
