You should be able to change the laptop keyboard fairly easily. The touchpad is likely more involved. make sure that nothing else has failed and then it might be worth the effort and expense to replace the keyboard and touchpad.

Linux is great, but even Ubuntu is harder to use than Windows.

Can you put the drivers on the same USB drive as Win 7? Do you notice if the SSD drive shows up as a separate drive? The SATA controller may be designed to only use the SSD as a cache, you can tell from the BIOS.

If you can make the business case that you will be more productive I would think the IT department would install it for you.

If it was me I would get the first one with the 17 inch monitor. it has higher resolution, which will look better and a quad core. The downside is the higher resolution will make the GPU work harder. That and the quad core processor are the big difference between the 2 and more games are...

There definitely needs to be more granular control of permissions. Whether this is on the app side or the O/S side makes for a good debate.

Hopefully you also have an external monitor as that 11.6 inch screen is not good for image processing.

For a laptop that old it doesn't seem worth the cost of repairing it.

I have worked on a few older HP laptops where the power jack comes loose from the mainboard. In some cases I was able to solder the connector back in place and in some cases I couldn't.
