just to add some monitors with speakers are not wired to any ports but there 3.5mm rca port so even with dvi or hdmi you may still need a stand alone 3.5mm cable ?? why I say should be covered in the monitors manual on its speaker use...

vga /d-sub don't carry sound you need a sound cable along with it some have it built in to the vga cable with a added 3.5 rca jack you plug in to the motherboard audio and the monitor audio ports...
