Been on the Nikon site, camera up to date apart from a lens distortion update, Found an old sd card (250mb) formatted that and it works fine. So looking like it could be the card itself, or the USB card reader having problems. Will buy another of each tomorrow and confirm one way or the other...

Thanks Ubrales, I have tried two cables and card can be accessed fine on both, it only becomes unrecognised after I have taken a picture to it.
