The choice of a dual core with a mediocre card and another dual core with a slightly better card.... How much RAM do those have? What resolution should be played on (assuming gaming is a factor here) And how is the budget, there might be other laptops that could fit better.

For the mamimum memory usable you should check on the manuffacturers website. They should give out those informations there. (or the manual if they still provide them)

What do you actually mean by "tons" of firefox tabs? I noticed when I have chrome running HD youtube Videos on my secondary monitor and Firefox on my main screen, my 16 GB are running out on around 200 tabs.

If your performacne problems just started recently it might be due to an updates driver or just from dust buildup.

If its one of the newer chipset series (965/975 series, 30 series, 40 series) it should be the Core 2 Quad QX9770 which is basically unaffordable. The Core 2 Quad Q9650 and 9550 are the next in line but also sold for quite a lot. The Q8400 and Q9400 could be a good choice if you find them cheap...
