Is the HDD you installed reformatted? Has it ever had an O/S installed on it? If there is no boot record, then it will not "start up". If you have a Mac OS install disk, you can put that in the Superdrive or CD/DVD drive if one is in the MacBook. OS/X should boot from the CD drive if it does...
