If I read it correctly, their fix involved losing the 5.1 in favour of 'simulated' 5.1 through stereo, which is the situation I currently have. To be honest though, I've been tweaking it a bit and I'm actually starting to think I was being overly fussy.

It didn't occur to me that there might be an actual hardware limitation! I'd sort of assumed that if Creative had removed the feature, that it must have worked well prior to that.
