Solved! Under sound, realtek digital output properties. Advanced tab, I had to check off the box for "allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" and now it works.

Still does not fix the fact that the dolby digital light wonmt come on....It comes on in test.

Yes the DVD's did in fact have 5.1 and I made sure to select it in the DVD menu to be sure.
