http://www.ubuntu.com/ is a good place to start. I assume your Windows install is hosed at this point? If so you have nothing to lose by trying it out, but it is a bit different.

Unfortunately, without the discs there is probably not much you can do. At this point your options are to contact Toshiba to order replacement recovery media, purchase a new copy of Windows, or install Linux (free).
