    thinking about portable notebooks..

Like I said you can configure your own laptop through Hp, dell, and some other portable computer manufacturers if you look around. I do suggest you look around, research, talk to professors/people in your field of study, etc. for your investment. Don't worry so much if you have until...

    IBM R40 Pentium M Processor

Well, from Jason 96 the message "Processor-Unknown P6 family not supported. Hardware failed" reads of something particular with the CPU. Jason's message also gave little info on his CPU, and when I run CPU-Z I find more information on my CPU--which I also wanted to give feedback on the...

    thinking about portable notebooks..

I would look at your univ. book store for possible discounts. A 12.1 in is a good size, I have a 14.1 in Dell 1405 and I am pleased with the size. The AMD Turion X2 appears to be acceptable in performance and comparable to the Intel Core (Yonah) Duo (link) The Turion X2 (Dual Core) is...

    IBM R40 Pentium M Processor

You can find additional information on your CPU with CPU Z and "Everest" link 1 and link 2. I would not regard your CPU as "lousy," the 599 MHz clock may be SpeedStep in action ("EIST" Enhanced Intel Speed Step). Good Luck

    Ethanol-driven Laptops

I found this link through the extreme tech link you gave. It was the tenth hit through a Yahoo search on "Antig Technology." From the I4U news link you can link to the Antig Technology link. It would be useful to have appropriate fonts for the language, and moreover to be able to read the...

    Which one would you pick?

Well I know what you mean, perhaps you can browse the notebook forums site for opinions and additional info on Gateway. (Personally I don't have experience with the brand)

    Which one would you pick?

Yes, of the list you made, the Gateway would be my choice. The Core 2 T5600 looks really good (other laptops in the list are slower either in speed, fsb, or the "older" yonah architecture which is also a 32 bit processor), HDD speed is okay & it has plenty of capacity, and it is not over your...

just ordered new laptop(need to know)

Yes, I am also a univ. student and I meant to take a strategy of configuring a one dimm 512 mb memory module and get another module seperate through newegg for instance. (save as much $ as possible) As for 64 bit vista--I do not know but have been interested in 64 computing (i.e. Windows xp64)...

    Which one would you pick?

I agree with the first choice of the list--faster core 2 cpu @ 667 MHz front side bus. However, for a recommendation I would keep looking around as others suggest.

just ordered new laptop(need to know)

The cpu looks good (turion x2), I would reconsider the wireless options more, a seperate memory upgrade instead of HP (relatively hefty upgrade $), and finally I don't know about that big 12 cell battery. I have a small battery on my laptop (14.1 inch Dell e1405: centrino duo "yonah") and it...

Laptop cpu and hdd activity and temp monitor? Is there one?

Upon download of HDTune, I can observe my hard drive temperture on my laptop. See if it would work on your computer as well (temperture measurement doesn't work for my desktop though). As for Cpu temp, I haven't check out any programs for this yet.

which notebook to buy HP or Dell or Other?

Hello, I cannot make a recommendation for one laptop over the other. However, in my opinion I suggest getting a hard disc drive with 7200 rpm (if you pick the HP or another configuration of different brand). Also, I do not think there is too much of a difference between the T7200 and T7400 (a...

Is there anything bad with this Dell laptop purchase?

I agree with KN's comment on the CPU. I chose a better processor and am aware of hard drive bottlenecks for laptop computers. The dell upgrades during the production of Yonah made me select a core duo @ 1.66 Ghz with 667 FSB, and a 7,200 rpm drive. I am happy with the computer, and when I...
