I was chasing this issue on a Win7 32bit Pro build that was running fine and then the next day gave the black screen with cursor instead of the login screen. I tried the sticky keys fix but didn't get the option for ease of access, tried safe mode, etc... What worked for me was, at bootup hit F8...
