There's no point forcing yourself into a career that you don't enjoy, especially if you feel you're great at it. Potential income shouldn't even be a consideration when choosing a career imo. Do what makes you happy.

I'm with ijack on this one. C and Assembly will be much more useful to you for what you're wanting to achieve.

I've got an i3-350m in my laptop. I do a bit of 3DS Max work on it, no large renders though. Usually just smaller objects. It gives me no grief for that. You'll definitely want some more power if you plan on doing large scenes and texturing and whatnot.
