The only way to permanently delete the data and make the chances of recovering it next to impossible, there are programs which delete the hard drive contents, rewrite it all, delete it all again, rewrite, etc... hundreds of times until there's pretty much no possible way to recover any data...

In my opinion, a light AV is a better option, something like malwarebytes. The point of viruses is to bypass anti-viruses. Getting an AV like norton or similar AV's that hog CPU usage is a bad idea. The thing that protects you the most is common sense! If something seems too good to be true...
