    I agree 100% with NEATOMAN. I will also add that many vehicles, such as Australian-built Toyotas and Mitsubishis, use proprietary communications protocols, rendering commercially available OBD-II scanners worthless.

    I think all of that is not by design, but a consequence of a ruthless determination to maintain an unshakeable commercial stranglehold on the software distribution as well as the hardware.
