I was under the impression that basic cable channels were free. Why was I able to have them for so many years? I'm confused : /

This morning I noticed that all my channels except 2-13 (I live in Los Angeles) were gone. I plus my cable directly into the TV from the wall. WHat do I need to do to get them back? I don't want to open an account with Time Warner. Can I just buy an adapter somewhere else? Please help!
