Thanks for your replies. I didn't actually open the laptop until after this issue presented, so I don't think I have caused the damage. I suspect the damage was there when I bought the laptop second hand which showed as the intermittent power failure and it's just got worse :-( I'll take a look...

Thanks for the suggestion. I've just tried that - no effect sadly. I think the key thing is it won't power on when the adapter is plugged in but without a battery - my understanding is that laptops can work without a battery present - does this indicate something wrong with the internal power...
