So yeah, no safe mode via methods given above. It takes me straight into recovery. Have any other tricks up your sleeve? Appreciate your time.

@webworkings 10-4, I will try that. Thanks. @hang-the-9 You're absolutely correct. Except in this particular case I have some idle time and like to tinker. The tablet was found on the road, not looking to buy a new board. I'm not even able to find firmware for this stupid thing.

I guess I wasn't clear or posted in the wrong sub. This is a nextbook tablet, so accessing this type of safe mode isn't possible. Although pressing the down volume button and power is supposed to produce safe mode, it does not & the nextbook logo just remains on the screen.
