The TOSLINK (Optical) port is capable of only stereo in lpcm or to carry encoded dolby digital content. HDMI on the other hand can carry upto 8 channels of pcm data. If your av receiver has the option to disable processing (enable direct passthrough) this might solve the tank in video quality...
