If you know how to, and can do so safely, I would recommend trying to clean the fans out. If you don't know how, you MAY be able to get away with just spraying compressed air into the vents for a few seconds.

Do the fans spin up? If so, does it work when connected to an external monitor?

If the CPU is soldered on to the motherboard then no. An SSD will help the games load faster, but thats it. Additional RAM will only help if you don't have much, and it's using a lot of it.
