AMD has a fairly high power consumption and heat index compared to it's counterparts. Value wise though it's a great idea.

I'm connecting my Chromecast to an unused 24" monitor using and HDMI to DVI converter. Is there an adapter to give audio out too? Have a set of powered pc speakers with an AUX port so a 3.5 mm would do fine, I just cant locate any adapters. Outrageously priced KVM type switches I can find but...

Personally I'd go with the Astro's simply because Ive had mine for a couple years now and they still perform superbly for my needs (primarily gaming).

Astro for gaming and the Sennheiser for music. Whichever is more important to you. Both are excellent.

Tone generator, or if you can probe both ends just power one end and check other end for voltage. Most breaks don't happen in the middle of the line, they happen at the terminations. Check those for obvious loose wires and cracks in any pcb's.
